Job Description:

Primary Purpose and Function of the Job

  • Ensure the efficient and successful functionality of the veterinary hospital, diagnostic lab, necropsy and Nutrition Center.  
  • Oversee all daily laboratory operations and supply/equipment management.  
  • Supervise veterinary technicians, hospital keepers, registrar and Nutrition Center staff. 

Requirements and Competencies

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in science or management field
  • Must have at least five years of experience in a medical or veterinary field
  • Must have at least three years of experience in a manager or supervisory role
  • Must have the ability to interact with media, zoo employees and guests and appropriately represent the company
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be conservation oriented
  • Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to company values and safety
  • Must have strong computer skills including working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be ability to utilize computerized medical record keeping systems
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work or stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work indoors/outdoors with or without A/C for entire shift
  • Must be able to bend, reach, twist and turn with complete flexibility
  • Must be available to work varying shifts/hours based on business need, to include opening, mid-, and closing shifts; weekends, and holidays

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician or Certified Veterinary Practice Manager preferred
  • AZA or Affiliate accredited zoo experience preferred

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with development and implementation of area and department goals
  • Communicate professionally and openly within zoo and park-wide staff; liaison between veterinarians and support staff
  • Depending on qualifications, participate in the chemical restraint team and assist in duties of veterinary technician role
  • Maintain a clear understanding of safety SOPs and ensure compliance from support staff
  • Promote guest interactions and the Explore-Inspire-Act guest experience
  • Promote team environment and provide conflict mediation when necessary; develop and promote ambassador recognition and motivation
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of corporate employee policies and departmental SOPs.
  • Oversee compliance with area SOPs including animal husbandry and update with assistance from team
  • Maintain inventory and conduct all departmental purchasing and relevant communications
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment and supply needs
  • Assist with preparing and monitoring budget
  • Conduct team meetings and attend zoo leadership meetings
  • Facilitate wildlife rehabilitation program
  • Develop knowledge and ability to act as back-up registrar (e.g., permit acquisition, local/state/federal regulation, licensing)
  • Submit work orders for facility maintenance
  • Maintain equipment warranties, service contracts, and equipment maintenance
  • Coordinate with the education department regarding scheduling and implementation of programming needs
  • Speak on behalf of the company during media relations events, as needed
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned
