Primary Purpose:

To assist veterinarians and medical laboratory scientists in all facets of managing the health of the park’s animal collection.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must have at least an AAS from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program

  • Veterinary Technician license (LVT) in the state of Texas, or eligible to acquire licensure within one year

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years work experience as a Veterinary Technician. Experience in a Zoological facility preferred.

  • Must have a valid state driver’s license and be able to obtain a company driver’s license

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills preferred

  • Basic computer skills required.

  • There is limited exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. PPE is provided when necessary.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull at least 30 pounds.

  • Position requires standing, walking, using hands, hearing, talking and vision, and shuttling equipment.

  • Must be available for call back in the event of emergency.

  • Provide excellent service to guests and ambassadors.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and work for prolonged periods of time in extreme weather conditions.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays

  • Consistently practices safe work habits including, but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment, lifting and reporting of unsafe situations

  • Must be willing to comply with and ensure ambassadors comply with all SEA grooming guidelines and employment standards.

  • Must be able to successfully complete all legal, company and department training requirements to include but not limited to passing required tests and certifications within established timelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinary staff in organizing and administering animal health care programs including preventative medicine, diagnostic procedures and therapy.

  • Prepare and assist with surgical, radiographic, necropsy and medical procedures, to include anesthetic monitoring.

  • Perform radiology procedures.

  • Provide medical treatment and phlebotomy.

  • Assist laboratory staff as needed in performing laboratory diagnostic procedures.

  • Perform pharmaceutical and consumable supply inventories

  • Cooperatively coordinate animal quarantine and pre-shipment protocols with veterinarians and animal areas.

  • Maintain records and enter data into computer and electronic animal record system

  • Archive diagnostic digital images.

  • Maintain pharmacy, surgical, radiographic, medical and necropsy supplies and equipment

  • Dispense vitamins, drugs and other supplies when needed.

  • Coordinate and implement surgical area safety programs with the department safety officer in the lab.

  • Be trained and maintain training as required to perform IATA compliant packaging of dangerous goods shipments.

  • Assist and participate in animal care projects as requested.

  • Follow engineering and work practice controls for laboratory workers.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by veterinarians.
