We’re seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and hard-working ASCP Certified Laboratory Technician to join our incredible Team.

What you get to do:

• Use your experience as a Certified Medical Technician (MLT) to assist in performing laboratory analyses in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis and cytology.

• Independently conduct daily analyses on water samples from our animals’ habitats. Training provided.

• Assist in preparing, packaging and shipping out samples to reference laboratories for additional diagnostics tests.

• Accurately keep manual and digital records of clinical and research samples, tests, and results.

• Keep inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies.

• Maintain laboratory equipment, making sure they meet quality control standards.

• Ensure excellent animal care service by responding to Team's requirements, expectations, and needs.

• Follow laboratory procedures according to federal, state, and local regulations.

• Other related duties as assigned, including assisting in other areas of the hospital as needed.

What it takes to succeed:

• Being a certified medical laboratory technician (MLT).

• Working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, including quality control (QC), preventative maintenance (PM) and troubleshooting.

• Working knowledge of hematology, chemistry and microbiology analyses.

• Ability to prepare laboratory reports and enter results in digital medical records.

• Ability to handle multiple tasks at once and work in a dynamic fast-paced work environment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications, spreadsheets, and databases.

• Ability to sit, walk, talk, use hands, hear, smell and have color vision. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.

• Work indoors with moderate noise from several large and small laboratory instruments, as well as refrigeration and freezer units.

• Work with limited exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. Protective equipment is provided when necessary.

• Able to positively interact with park guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and/or language, and individuals with special needs.

• Enthusiastically represent United Parks & Resorts, Inc. by displaying a positive attitude, and a high level of commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.

Education and Experience

• A bachelor’s or an associate degree.

• Certified medical technician (MLT) is a minimum requirement.

• Registered with the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is a minimum requirement.

• At least 2 years of working experience, as a graduate, medical laboratory technician.

• Experience in animal laboratory diagnostics preferred but not required.

Hours and availability

• This is a full-time position; 8hrs a day and 40hrs per week. Daytime.

• Available to work 5 consecutive days, including weekends and holidays.

• On occasion, overtime hours may be necessary for animal care.

Compensation:

• 35.75 USD per hour

Cetacean Conservation Biology Apprentice - The Marine Mammal Center

The Cetacean Conservation Biology Apprentice (CCBA) is an intensive hands-on apprenticeship designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to community-powered conservation, with a strong emphasis on cetacean biology and inclusive engagement. Hosted within one of the world’s largest marine mammal stranding response programs, the CCBA supports both scientific research and community outreach efforts focused on cetacean conservation.

The apprentice will participate in regular marine mammal surveys conducted via small vessels and from shorelines in both nearshore bay and offshore environments. Responsibilities include assisting with survey preparation, volunteer and intern training, and data management using tools such as photo-identification, drone operations, and line-transect sampling, alongside software such as Mysticetus and ArcGIS.

This apprenticeship also includes training in small boat handling, field data collection techniques, participation in collaborative research meetings and community working groups that focus on science-driven conservation initiatives. In addition, the CCBA will support project and volunteer coordination, providing mentorship to interns and volunteers while strengthening their own leadership and organizational skills.

Animal Care Crew Senior Manager - The Marine Mammal Center

The Animal Care Crew Senior Manager oversees the Animal Care Crew Program at The Marine Mammal Center’s Sausalito hospital. This position acts as a conduit and advocate for information sharing for the Animal Care Crew Program and Veterinary Science Program ensuring continuity of animal care across the 28 different animal care volunteer teams (crews) and Animal Care Crew Management (ACCM) staff at the Sausalito main hospital, and adherence to protocols as set by the veterinary and husbandry teams.

Stranding Biologist & Research Technician - Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network

Stranding Biologist:

General Duties: The Stranding Biologist will work with the Stranding Program Manager, contract veterinarians, staff, students, interns and volunteers to enhance reporting and response efforts for marine mammal strandings; collect consistent, high-quality data that are used to determine causes of strandings and death; support research projects; and engage in public education and outreach. Specifically, the position will help monitor a 24-hour stranding hotline; assist with and lead field stranding response; collect, archive and inventory samples; lead and participate in necropsies; manage data and documentation, including writing reports; maintain equipment and ensure safe and clean lab conditions; assist with public outreach activities and volunteer coordination; contribute to research projects, conduct data mining, and data analyses.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education: BS degree in biology, marine science, wildlife biology, or other relevant field.

Minimum previous experience: 1 yr of experience in a related field

Requirements: Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; Applicant is required to obtain an Alabama vessel license and complete a DISL boating safety class, and should be willing to obtain a hazardous materials shipping certification within 6 months of employment. Occasional out-of-state and overnight travel required.

Skills and Abilities:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills in a professional setting, including ease of speaking to the public and responsible use of social media

• Physically fit, able to lift at least 50 lbs and strong swimmer

• Ability to endure long hours under harsh field conditions, including temperatures ranging 20°F-100°F, rain, humidity and biting insects

• Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships

• Ability to work independently, think logically and apply problem-solving techniques

• Calm demeanor under stressful conditions

• Willingness to work irregular hours and be responsive and reliable at all times is essential

• Knowledge and experience operating large vehicles, ATVs, kayaks, vessels up to 24’ and trailering

• Must carry a “go-bag” when on-call and have dependable transportation for rapid response outside of normal business hours

• Knowledge of marine mammal conservation issues, especially relating human interactions

• Experience with computer software such as MS Office, and ArcGIS

• Prior experience with stranding response and necropsy (marine mammal or other relevant large-animal experience) is a plus

• Familiarity with MMPA, NOAA/NMFS and USFWS stranding protocols

The position is full-time for 1-year, with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance. Pay is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.

Supervision: The Stranding Biologist will be directly supervised by the Stranding Programs Manager in collaboration with the MMRP Director.

This position is responsible for providing diagnostic and research laboratory technical support for the Alaska SeaLife Center. Duties include oversight of the day-to-day quality control and analyses including but not limited to hematology, serum chemistry, microbiology (aerobic and anaerobic), urinalysis, fecal parasite exams, and water coliform tests. Apprentice Radiologist - ZooRadOne

ZooRadOne has an open apprenticeship position for a radiologist to join our 2-DACVR practice. We are looking for a board-certified radiologist (DACVR or DECVDI) or a last year radiology resident with enormous interest in and tireless commitment to the unique, stressful, intellectually challenging, generally ‘un-lucrative’ and unabashedly awesome field of zoo and marine mammal diagnostic imaging. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of zoo/mm species is a huge bonus, as is previous hands-on work with these animals. Just as important is a meticulous reading style, ruinous commitment to excellence, stamina to research a great deal for every case, and comfort with discomfort (i.e. the unknown). Reports typically include detailed figures and all are reviewed (by M. Ivančić) before being finalized.
