Veterinary Technician - Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

TITLE: Veterinary Technician
REPORTS TO: Staff Veterinarian
AVAILABLE: ASAP
HOURS: Full Time (40+ hours/ week)
SALARY: Based on experience and certifications

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park is dedicated to educating, entertaining, and inspiring our guests to respect and preserve wildlife by providing unique and memorable experiences for visitors of all ages to connect with marine life. One of the world’s oldest marine animal parks, Gulfarium opened its doors in 1955 on the beautiful beach of Okaloosa Island in the panhandle of Florida with a main dolphin habitat made entirely from battleship steel. Throughout the years, many additional habitats and exhibits have been added to house a diverse population including seals, sea lions, penguins, pelicans, teleost and elasmobranch fishes, and a wide variety of reptiles. The Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center was developed as a 501(c)(3) in 2015 to continue the efforts of Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park rescuing and rehabilitating over 100 sea turtles annually.

The veterinary technician is responsible for assisting the veterinarian with providing excellent care and treatment of the animals at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park and Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Collect, process, and analyze biological samples for any and all animals as directed by the veterinarian

  2. Setup, assist with and clean up after medical procedures

  3. Dispense and/or administer medications under the direction of the veterinarian

  4. Maintain veterinary equipment in working order including conducting or scheduling routine maintenance as needed

  5. Maintain inventory and order supplies and medications

  6. Maintain medical records

  7. Communicate regularly with staff at Gulfarium via personal communication, phone conversations, WhatsApp and email

  8. Educate guests about the animals at the Gulfarium and Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician including experience with blood collection and processing, administration of medications, and calculation of drug dosages, as well as knowledge of general imaging procedures.

  • Minimum of one year experience with aquatic or zoo animals is preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or Veterinary Technician degree from an accredited associates program

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, public speaking and computer skills required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with Tracks medical record system preferred.

  • Availability to work weekends, some holidays, and occasional early mornings or late-night hours required.

  • Valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands listed are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, bend/stoop, crawl/kneel, carry, reach, push/pull, and lift up to 50 lbs. Employee is required to apply advanced manual dexterity that requires extreme accuracy such as those used to repair complex equipment or electronic instruments, perform microscopic examinations, administer injections, conduct complex laboratory tests, etc. Employee must have good vision to read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes. It is necessary for the employee to differentiate between colors. Routinely, work is performed within a typical office or hospital setting or outside, exposed to variations in the weather. Occasionally work may be performed in confined, cramped quarters, or in extreme cold or extreme heat.
