Job Opportunity: Facilities Maintenance and Water Quality
Location: Pacific Marine Mammal Center, Laguna Beach, Ca
Duration: Tues thru Saturday 5 hours daily
Commitment: Part time

Compensation: $28 an hour to start

Pacific Marine Mammal Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine mammals, as well as public education and ocean conservation. Our facility relies on high standards of animal care, including maintaining optimal water quality in our pools and rehabilitation tanks.

Position Overview:

We are offering a job opportunity for a motivated individual to gain hands-on experience in water quality monitoring and systems management in a marine mammal rehabilitation setting as well as a facilities maintenance technician. Facilities maintenance is responsible for ensuring campus cleanliness and appearance to the highest standard and that buildings, equipment, and systems are safe, functional, and well-maintained.

Key Responsibilities: Water Quality

  • Assist with daily water sampling and testing (chlorine, pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temperature, etc.)

  • Monitor and maintain filtration and life support systems

  • Record, analyze, and report/document water quality data

  • Support cleaning and maintenance of pools, tanks and system equipment

  • Collaborate with animal care and veterinary staff to ensure optimal environmental conditions

Key Responsibilities: Facilities Maintenance

  • Perform general maintenance tasks (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry)

  • Conduct routine inspections of building systems and equipment

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical or structural issues

  • Responding to maintenance requests and emergency repairs

  • Maintain maintenance logs and service records

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes

  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors when needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in water quality/LSS, or related field and facilities maintenance

  • Basic understanding of water chemistry or aquatic systems a plus

  • Comfortable working outdoors and around wild animals

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow protocols

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks

  • Reliable, punctual, and eager to learn

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely

  • Good time management and organizational skills

  • Physical ability to lift, climb, and work in various conditions
